APEXblog.nl - Tips and Tricks

About This Blog:
I (Richard Weug) started this blog primary for myself to save all kinds of Apex tips and tricks in one place. To use it as a place to write down how I used some coding in my own projects, but also to copy and paste all kinds of articles I find on the Internet. (So I never have to wonder on what website did I read about??? When I see something interesting I collect the content so I have my own archive/knowlegde base.

Low cost APEX reporting tool (Excel)

Written by Richard Weug. Posted in Tips and Tricks

Plug-in uses the source queries of all report regions on a page (standard or interactive) to fetch and convert data to temporary XML with DBMS_XMLGEN package. Plug-in then applies on temporary XML one or two XSLT transformation with XSLT processor implemented as DBMS_XSLPROCESSOR package. If we can’t build desired output just with XSLT final conversions can be made with ConverBlob procedure. Plug-in then starts download of transformed output. XSLT transformations must be previously uploaded in APEX application as static files.

Temporary XML used by plugin is XML representation of data visible in APEX report. Filtering, choosing columns, sorting, grouping done in interactive report are saved in temporary XML. You don’t need to repeat all this work in XSLT. Temporary XML is the closest possible representation of data seen in APEX report if Use Filters is turned on. This is one of the best features of the plug-in.

Helper procedures are specialized for Office formats, but any text, HTML or XML base format can be produced and downloaded (like Scalable Vector Graphics - SVG, Formatted objects - FO, Virtual Reality Modeling Language – VRML).

With plugin you also get Query2Report PL/SQL package to build report from your custom queries which may be totally unrelated with APEX reports data. You can build your own page processing or even your process plug-in based on Query2Report.Query2DownloadReport procedures.
